price differences and later tables to calculate alternative
configurations, or just contact me for a
quote. Note that all systems now include a 36GB 15000rpm disk at a
minimum (Fujitsu MAX3036NC, the fastest 80pin disk for access time I've
found so far, and also a very quiet drive).

Subtract 15 to change blue skins to later green skins, or 20 to have marked original green skins.
Add 25 to include keyboard and mouse.
NOTES:
#1: An example number-crunching system, ie. best possible CPUs, but with
minimal graphics, reasonable disk, cheap skins, and good but inexpensive RAM.
#2: Skins have scratches, etc. Add 25 to replace with skins in good condition.
#3: Custom-mod CPU, warranty on the CPU module is 90 days. Extended warranty
available for extra: +50 for 6 months, +100 for 1 year, +200 for 3 years.
Please email me for full details of this custom CPU.
#4: Subtract 75 to have 2GB RAM using 4 banks instead of 1 bank.

NOTE: These configurations are not fixed. I can upgrade/downgrade as required,
eg. R10K/250 V12. Use the upgrade prices below or price differences above to
calculate other combinations, or feel free to email me or call if you're
interested in a configuration not shown above. I also have several 'special' systems available,
ie. with original professional software setups (Alias/Maya); email for details.
Example Graphics Upgrades (easy to calculate: find the difference between various single-R12K/400 configs).
For other examples, eg. V6 -> MXE, just negate the opposite option already shown, ie. V6 -> MXE = +100.

Here is a graph showing how much faster SE, SSI and SSE are compared to SI for geometry performance.
The Geometry Engine used in E-series graphics options is 40% faster and the Raster Engine is 15% faster.
Disk upgrade options are as follows:
73GB 10K 1.6": +5
73GB 10K 1": +15
73GB 15K 1": +30
146GB 10K 1": +50

For an extra disk with sled, select the disk required from the
SCSI Disks Table and add 25, eg. an extra 1" 15K 36GB Fujitsu
MAX3036NC on a sled would be +50.
See the Parts/Spares page for a full list of extras, options and upgrades, but here are some examples:
Add 45 to upgrade a 2GB/2-bank config to a 2GB/1-bank config
Add 15 to upgrade a 1GB/2-bank config to a 1GB/1-bank config
Add 20 to upgrade an older 030-0887-00x motherboard to a newer 030-1467-00x motherboard.
Add 15 to upgrade an older Frontplane/XBow 1.3 to XBow 1.4.
Add 15 to upgrade an older Lucent PSU to the later 747W Cherokee.
In general, the faster the CPU module in a system, the better the
base RAM/disk will be and the more extras will be included. Price
differences are then tied to the choice of graphics to make things
consistent. Thus, given a particular budget, consider a better CPU
option first because, for just a little extra, a system may have much
better RAM/disk by default. The table is ordered in terms of CPU
speed, dual-CPU configurations shown first. Choose the example
closest to your needs in the table, then add on any extras as
required (or discounts) - see the list of example optional
extras/upgrades after the table, or the Parts/Spares page for the full list. If
you're not sure, feel free to email or call me. Widen your browser
window to see the full table.
Please see the Octane section of the Parts/Spares page for a full list of available upgrades and extras for Octane, eg. PCI option cards, etc. Further items such as DVDROM/CDROM/CDRW/DAT units, SCSI cables, etc. can be found on the SCSI Items page.
Please see my Octane Architecture page for details on the Octane system, aswell as the other information available on the main Octane index.
See the shipping costs page for details
of postage charges to the UK, mainland Europe and beyond. A typical
shipping cost would be 25 UKP for a UK destination (by PF48 for
usually two boxes, though a single-CPU VPro system with no extras can
just be shipped in one box), and between 30 and 90 UKP for most
mainland European destinations. For destinations beyond Europe, see
the shipping costs page for full
details. Alternatively, a personal collection is welcome; I live in
Edinburgh, Scotland. Or I can deliver by train/bus if the distance
isn't too far (buyer just covers my travel expenses).
Monitors and monitor cables are also available - please see the monitor page for details.
Detailed Notes
All Octanes include a locking bar and power cable.
Most Octane2 systems have a few minor marks, but nothing serious.
If you require a hinv output of any configuration, let me know and I will send it to you. Similarly, I can send any photos required of any system or part.
All systems have a full installation of IRIX 6.5.30m (my own special installation with lots of extras such as Blender, BMRT, Ayam3D, mplayer, OpenOffice, Freeware, Nekoware, Quake, Quake2, Quake3, etc.) Adobe Premiere 4.2 is installed, plus many other items, including a good custom desktop layout. A typical installed software list in Software Manager looks like this, though I can of course customise in any way required, or even just put on a default installation with no extras if preferred.
All systems valued more than 100 UKP come with the Octane/Octane2 demos CD, my custom SGI Nekoware split (8 CDs) and my SGI Gifts CDs. See the IRIX CDs page for details of these CDs. Alternatively, I can include a full 6.5.30 CD set for +50 (email for details).
Dual-CPU systems offer significantly better responsiveness than a single-CPU machine, faster performance for applications that can exploit 2 CPUs (eg. animation programs, compression, movie playback, etc.) aswell as greater flexibility (render on one CPU, continue working on the other). For single-threaded applications though, eg. OpenOffice and Firefox, higher-clocked single-CPU systems are faster.
V12 graphics is the best graphics option available. V12 has 128MB combined VRAM/TRAM (up to 108MB for textures), is 2X faster than V6/V8 for geometry processing, supports many more resolutions and has extra advanced features, though V8 does have the same amount of memory as V12. Note that all VPro systems have Quake3 installed aswell as Quake1 and Quake2.
V6 graphics is valued less than MXI or MXE, even though V6 is faster and has up to 4X more texture memory. This is partly due to the use of MXI/MXE in professional video editing systems, and thus higher demand for them. It is also because V6 does not support 1280x1024 at 72Hz, 75 or 76Hz; on older monitors, V6 must run at a reduced frame buffer depth at 60Hz if using 1280x1024. To get the most from V6, it must be run at 96Hz, eg. by using a newer monitor such as the GDM5411, or one can instead use 1600x1200 at 72Hz which works ok. V10 does not have this restriction. Here is a summary:
CAD-oriented, fewer GIS, imaging, heavy texture
hw features, not so oriented, complex animation,
much VRAM or TRAM. more features, dual-head, etc.
Old Series VPro V6 (32MB RAM) V8 (128MB RAM)
Original GE speed
New Series VPro V10 (32MB RAM) V12 (128MB RAM)
2X Faster GE speed
Remember that many tasks are often pixel-fill bound, so V12 may not offer that much of a performance increase over V8 for complex tasks. V8 is an excellent solution for most users; indeed, my main desktop system used to be a V8 before I switched to using a Fuel (one would rarely notice the difference between a V8 and a V12, except for when the wider resolution support of V12 is a factor).
Extras/Upgrades
See the Octane section of the Parts/Spares page for a full list of options, extras, upgrades, etc. If you're interested in a configuration not listed on my site, please contact me for details.
