R7K/600MHz CPU Module for O2, Warranty Information ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ The price of 250 UKP is for hobbyists only, with a 30 day warranty (which will be strictly adhered to). At this price, I make a _loss_ on the CPU of around 45 UKP. My goal is to encourage commercial sales at a higher price & warranty level to thus enable hobbyists to obtain the CPU at a lower price. I'm doing this purely as a favour for the hobbyist community. My current stock level is: THREE AVAILABLE Naturally if all of them sell to hobbyists then I'll make a significant loss (and thus won't be doing this again), but that's the risk I've decided to take. However, hobbyists are of course welcome to take advantage of the longer commercial warranties, but I'm also happy to offer the following, for hobbyists only: 60 day warranty: 275 UKP 90 day warranty: 300 UKP As for commercial pricing, it is as follows: 6 month warranty: 350 UKP 12 month warranty: 400 UKP 36 month warranty: 450 UKP 60 month warranty: 500 UKP (ie. 5 years; still cheaper than the R12K/400!) Performance ^^^^^^^^^^^ See: http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/perfcomp.html In almost all cases, the R7K/600 is faster than the R12K/400 in O2. The exceptions are those tasks which involve very complex memory access and heavy fp processing. Thus, for example, the R7K/600 is 13% faster for the simple Maya test shown on my site, but it is significantly slower for the complex Alias test (the R12K/400 is 25% faster for the Alias test). The CPUs are fairly similar for the Blender test, with the R12K/400 a moderate 5% faster. However, the R7K/600 does very well for all integer tasks, eg. RC5, compiling Lynx, etc., faster in virtually every case. Power Consumption and Noise ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ The R7K/600 uses very little power, only 3W, so the whole system is very economical. It generates hardly any heat at all, whereas the R12K/400 runs quite hot. A fan is not required, so there is no noise, unlike the R12K/400 which does have a fan. Indeed, the R7K/600 doesn't even need a heatsink. Video Capture Reliability ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ It has long been pondered whether the R5K/R7K line is better than the R10K/R12K series of CPUs when capturing video on O2. To date, nobody has tested this. However, if I can, some time in the summer I will conduct proper comparisons to finally settle this question once and for all.
