SGI Freeware August 2003, Part 4 of 4 Freeware CD Split V1.0 by Ian Mapleson Last change: 12/May/2003 Contents: 1. Introduction 2. Installation 3. Prerequisites 1. Introduction This CD is part 4 of a carefully constructed split of the SGI Freeware August 2003 onto four CDs. Please see the README on CD 1 for a full introduction and background on this freeware split. My methodology is to put the most interesting and useful items that would be wanted by the majority of home/hobbyist users onto CD 1, with less interesting/useful items arbitrarily stored on CDs 2, 3 and 4. However, some people will have a different focus for using the freeware, eg. experimenting with window managers, in which case my split of the freeware may not be relevant. Such users will find items like GNOME, Enlightenment and WindowMaker on CDs 2, 3 and 4, along with the more obscure GNU products, etc. Useful items which could not be fitted on CD 1 will generally be located on CD 2, ie. other tools for 2D imaging, image processing, network monitoring, security, communications, audio processing, etc. For example, ImageMagick is on CD 2. See the README file on CD 2 for full details. All remaining items which could not be fitted onto CDs 1 and 2 can be found on CDs 3 and 4, with no bias towards either CD. A list of the freeware products on this CD is contained in the file cd4prods.txt. Also, web page release notes for all the freeware products (from all four CDs) are contained in the html subdirectory on each CD, while on this CD a summary list of product titles for the items on CDs 1, 2 and 3 are in the files cd1prods.txt, cd2prods.txt and cd3prods.txt. Equivalent files are on the other three CDs. These documents should aid the location of items without the need for swapping CDs; remember one can use grep to search the contents of a file. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Installation It is highly likely that items from this CD and CDs 2 and 3 will depend on items from CD 1. Thus, it is best to install CD 1 first before installing items from the other CDs. Plus, I have not attempted to resolve any dependencies between the items on CDs 2, 3 and 4. Thus, you may need to read in CDs 2 and 3 aswell in order to resolve any installation conflicts. The following assumes that this CD is mounted on /CDROM. As root, run up Software Manager (use the Toolchest or enter swmgr in a shell). Type /CDROM/dist as a source location and then click on Customize Installation (or just double-click on the CDROM icon instead). When the distribution has been read, eject CD 4, insert CD 2, choose Open Additional Distribution from the File menu and read in the contents of CD 2. Repeat for CD 3. Once read, swmgr will show all the items ticked for installation. Unselect all items by choosing Unmark All from the Selected menu. Now manually select the items you want to install, resolve any conflicts and click on Start. You may wish to manually examine the contents of products you want to install before starting the installation to ensure that any useful extras such as demo programs and documentation are also installed. NOTE: the items which could not be fitted onto CDs 1, 2 and 3 are, as mentioned earlier, on CD 4. However, there was still a great deal of unused space left over on CD 4, so I have included various other shareware/freeware items on CD 4 as a useful extra resource. These include: Certain Impact Version 1.0 Impact Demos CD Version 1.0 Form & Vision Eclipse 3.1.3 MPlayer 1.0pre3 (timo) Macromedia's Flash5 plugin - 5.0.89 Mekton Game Mozilla for IRIX 1.4 OpenOffice: Office Suite, v1.0.3.1 XV 3.10a A selections file to install most of these extras is included, called extras.txt. Note that the Impact demos and Mekton game are not included in the selections file since these items can only be installed on systems with MGRAS graphics, ie. Indigo2 IMPACT systems and Octane systems with equivalent or E-series graphics options. If you want to install these items then select them manually. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Prerequisites Many items on CDs 2, 3 and 4 depend on items from CD 1. Thus, I recommend installing all of CD 1 before installing anything from this CD. See the README file on CD 1 for full details. Feedback on this freeware split is most welcome. Cheers! :) Ian.
