FAQ for SGI modem stuff. ------------------------ Q: Can I use the wiring layout for Indigo/Indigo2? A: This wiring specification is the same for the following SGI computers: Indy, Indigo, Indigo2, Challenge S, Challenge M, Power Challenge M MENET 4-Enet, 6-serial board (XT-FE-4TX-6A). Check out the manual for your specific machine at techpubs.sgi.com to see if the serial port pinouts are the same (check the pin number and description). Q: How can I get my 57k modem to go faster than 38400? A: The speed of your data transfer is dictated by the speed of your serial port, not your modem. If you have an Indy, this is 38400 peak rate. In reality you need to choose a speed that your modem and serial port are both capable of so if, like me, you have a 28800 modem and an Indy, the common speed is 19200 because the serial port supports only certain speeds, and there isn't one between 19200 and 38400 (I'd lose data if I set it to 38400) Q: Which modems work with my SGI? A: I'd go for a standard modem by a recognised manufacturer, which supports at least V.34 or higher. If you are using IRIX 6.5 you can check which modems are supported by scrolling through the list in the 'Add a modem' section of System Manager. If all else fails, you should be ok with a Hayes compatible modem. Q: Do I need a fast modem? A: Depends on what you want to do. To a certain extent it is not really worth it, however, unless you have a high speed internet connection, as standard speed is only about 2k anyway in my experience of home internet connections. Your ISP will probably have higher speed lines available at a price. I find that for telnet and ftp my 28800 USR is more than adequate. Q: Can't I use an Apple Mac cable at all?? A: I wouldn't risk it, even if it works for a while. They are *supposed* to be wired differently, but if one has been incorrectly manufactured it may well be ok. Best thing to do is go through my wiring procedure anyway, just to be sure. Q: How do I set up slip? A: From what I can gather from the online books this is very similar to setting up PPP, although I have not gone into it as I have nobody to connect to who uses SLIP. There is a good selection of links to various SGI related sites at Ian Maplesons' futuretech site at www.futuretech.vuurwerk.nl (european mirror) and sgi.cartsys.net/mapleson/ (USA mirror) Q: I don't have the time or the expertise to do it, can you do it for me? A: If you really want me to, and if you pay the postage and packing both ways, no. But I can give you moral support. Q: In Star Wars, where does Luke keep his 'JEDI weapon'? A: Wrong FAQ. Try WHSmith.
