Personal IRIS

Expanding the Personal IRIS

[The Personal Iris] As users' computing needs continue to grow and diversify, the need to expand current system configurations becomes more prevalent. Silicon Graphics is committed to meeting current and future customer requirements by offering a range of products which allow users to mov ebeyond their current system constraints, enabling their systems to grow with them.

The Personal IRIS currently supports up to three internal SCSI storage drives, including disk, tape and floppy drives. For users who need more storage, Silicon Graphics now offers the IRIS File, a SCSI drive expansion chassis that allows users to expand their Personal IRIS. The range of expansion options for the Personal IRIS includes:

Additional Storage Capacity:

Users now have the ability to add disk storage accessible either locally or across a network. Total disk capacity can be extended up to 4.5GB for a Personal IRIS and an IRIS File fully configured with 760MB disk drives.

Improved Flexibility:

As many as seven user-installed SCSI devices can be supported by a fully configured Personal IRIS and IRIS File, giving the user control over the final configuration of their system.

Choice of Drives:

Users have a wide range of drives to choose from, including 200MB, 380MB and 760MB hard disk drives; 60MB and 150MB tape drives; and 1.44MB and 1.2MB floppy disk drives.

Expansion to Future Products:

Both the Personal IRIS and IRIS File are designed to allow additional SCSI devices to be integrated as they become available.

Real-Time Data Access:

Since the Personal IRIS and IRIS File both use the SCSI interface, users have real-time access to all SCSI subsystems installed in either chassis.

Easy Installation:

Because drives for the Personal IRIS can be easily installed and addressed by users, no additional software [2] or assistance is required. A Drive Address Switch [3], mounted on the back of each drive, allows users to define a unique SCSI address when installing the drive.

Hard Disk Drives

All of the following disk drives are available from Silicon Graphics for use in either Personal IRIS or the IRIS File. All are SCSI interfaced and can he used either as a system disk to hold system software and applications, or as an option disk to expand system capacity. Each disk drive includes the mounting brackets and connectors needed for easy user installalion.

Tape Drives

Each of the following SCSI-interfaced tape drives for the Personal IRIS and the IRIS File can be used either to install software or back-up and restore files and applications. The 1/4" tape drives include the mounting brackets and connectors. System software, shipped to users on 1/4" tapes recorded at low density (60MB), can be installed using either a 60 or 150MB tape drive.

IRIS File Specifications

The IRIS File has four disk slots and can house up to five SCSI devices (either four full-height devices or three full-height and two half-height devices). Serving as a SCSI bus extension to the Personal IRIS, the IRIS File gives users the freedom to add devices as needed. Since the SCSI interface is common to both the IRIS File and the Personal IRIS, users can custom configure any combination of SCSI devices to meet their computing needs. With the addition of the IRIS File, users can take advantage of the SCSI controller's full potential to support seven devices!

[1] A Personal IRIS and IRIS File fully configured can physically house up to eight SCSI drives. Four full-height and four half-height drives. However, the SCSI controller can support only seven SCSI devices.

[2] Some SCSI subsystems may require a particular release of the IRIX operating system. Please contact your Silicon Graphics sales representative for further details.

[3] The disk drives used with older Personal IRIS models may be unable to use the Drive Access Switch. Please contact your Silicon Graphics sales representative for further details.
