Key (all GPU clocks are given as 'Core/Shader/RAM' or 'Core/Boost/RAM'; a single number refers to just the core clock): RX 580 = PowerColor Red Devil RX 580 8GB, default 1190/2000 core/RAM. GTX 780 Ti = EVGA GTX 780 Ti 3GB (Reference cooler), stock @ 980/1046/1750 core/boost/RAM (stabilises under load at around 1125MHz). I'm not going to test VERY HIGH as it only seems to be about 10% slower than HIGH (assuming sufficient VRAM is available, eg. 5600X + 1080 Ti gave 144fps avg at 1080p), so just infer from existing data if you're interested in how VERY HIGH would behave, though the Q9550 + RX 580 result suggests more than 4 CPU threads are required aswell. The following discussion refers to the use of a 4GHz 2700K and 780 Ti... VRAM usage is as follows (this is peak usage, which occurs during the 2nd test): 1080p: LOWEST: 1248MB LOW: 1439MB MEDIUM: 1670MB HIGH: 3359MB VERY HIGH: 7465MB 1440p: LOWEST: 1491MB LOW: 1609MB MEDIUM: 2000MB HIGH: 3581MB VERY HIGH: 7765MB The prelaunch options panel does state that VERY HIGH uses more than 4GB VRAM. I'll check with some other card to be sure. CPU usage at 1080p is typically 66% with all threads loaded, with GPU usage fluctuating between 88% and 100%, though it's noticeable that some CPU threads are much higher, 80% or more. Turning off SMT with a 2700K results in a stuttery mess sometimes, hence this game needs more than 4 threads (or cores). Average fps scales as follows with detail level: LOWEST: 137.0 LOW: 115.8 MEDIUM: 94.8 HIGH: 86.9 VERY HIGH: 60.6 (but minimum and lows may suffer on lesser hardware) Performance is basically identical with LOWEST and LOW presets. Likewise, performance is similar for MEDIUM and HIGH presets, though the latter does use a lot more VRAM. If you have the VRAM then just use HIGH. The Q9550 with an RX 580 could not run the test properly. The first two test scenes weren't too bad (avg 56fps), but even at 1080p/LOW the last scene absolutely tanked with enormous stuttering, giving minimums and lows of 0fps. The CPU was totally maxed out while the GPU was virtually idling, which confirms such an older quad core with no SMT cannot handle this game, even at low detail. RotTR needs more than 4 threads, a 4-core with SMT or a CPU with more cores such as a 9700K, though whether 6 cores could cope is an interesting question, eg. an i5 8600 or perhaps an old Phenom II 1090T. If IPC/arch mattered more then something like a i5 760 would fair better, but the results for the 5GHz 2700K with SMT turned off suggest this is not the case. Testing the dual XEON 2640 system under Win10 instead of Win7 only hurt performance across the board, but maybe it would be better with DX12. I've not yet decided how to approach DX12 testing.
