Strange, it works ok with the 8800GTs, though for some reason oc'd 8800GT SLI gave lower results than stock 8800GT SLI, even though the single cards are in a more sensible order. Perhaps a rerun with newer drivers, 64bit Windows, etc. may resolve the issue. Or maybe it's a CPU bottleneck? The Athlon II X2 250 results suggest this is a possibility, something I'd say confirmed by the difference between different CPUs using just one 4870. Certainly, at this low resolution, PT Boats is CPU-bound. This is why the GTX 280 does well when running with the 5GHz 2700K (beats a GTX 460 with a 4820K @ 3.9GHz), and why a 580 isn't that much quicker than a 280 when running with the same 5GHz 2700K. Indeed, the fast MSI 580 with a lowly i3 550 (even oc'd to 4.7) is way down the list, beaten by a single 460 with a better CPU. Likewise, performance with a 7970 halves when dropping from a 5GHz 2700K to a stock i5 760. This is one of the clearest examples of a game-related CPU bottleneck. Having said that, the frame rates are so high that it doesn't really matter. The same behaviour occurs with lower-spec configs, eg. an oc'd Athlon II X2 250 @ 4110MHz and a 4870 is faster than a 5850 with the same CPU at stock speed, but again the frame rates are still quite good, so perhaps for this game the CPU bottleneck would only be relevant for systems with CPUs less than a 2-core Athlon or Core2, and a GPU that's less than a 4870. Further testing should confirm this. Likewise, CPU issues probably explain why certain single-980 results are way lower than one might expect, while of course multiple 980s don't scale. Also, 3-way 580 SLI doesn't scale properly at this low res, ie. two 580s are faster than three 580s. At this higher res and detail level, a better CPU doesn't help so much and it falls back, just able to stay ahead of 8800GT SLI with a lesser CPU. By contrast, a 580 with a good CPU stays near the top; notice though the gap between GTX 460 SLI and a single 580 has shrunk now that CPU power is less important. Meanwhile, a good 580 paired with a lesser i3 550 CPU remains much further down the list, again showing the i3 is holding back this test. It seems PT Boats really needs more than 2 cores. Multi-GPU scaling still isn't working that well at this resolution for more powerful cards, though it seems functional with the 8800GT using the i7 870. One minor oddity is the way, using the same 5GHz 2700K, the GTX 260 Core 216 ended up slightly ahead of the GTX 280. It should run ok on one of the less common 8800GTs which have 1GB RAM (not tested these yet), given that it runs fine on 4870/4890 cards which have 1GB. Oddly though, it does manage to run on a 512MB 4870, albeit very slowly (note the collapse in performance compared to a 1GB 4870). The 8800 GTX with 768MB couldn't run it either. The GTX 260 Core 216 managed to finish the test, though it's dipped below the 4870 with more RAM. Curious to note the 4870 1GB isn't any quicker with a 5GHz 2700K. The GTX 280 has dropped way down, revealing it's lack of performance for DX10 features compared to newer cards; indeed, at high res/detail, this test seems to favour AMD cards as the 5850s do quite well even with a lesser CPU. Meanwhile, GTX 460 SLI has finally overtaken a single stock 580, showing how the test is now much more GPU-bound. Finally the i5 760 with two 980s shows a degree of scaling, but it's small, suggesting that maybe this CPU isn't good enough to drive such a powerful SLI setup for this game. However, the scaling isn't that much even with a 3930K/4.8, in which case one can only conlude the game itself isn't written to exploit multiple GPUs that well. Three 980s doesn't scale either. NB 1: sometimes this test gives a 'Frames' number which doesn't make sense, eg. for the i5-760/7970 and E8400/460 tests above. No idea why this should be. NB 2: Interesting to note that, in general, given 1GB VRAM isn't enough for this test, it's mostly NVIDIA cards that fail to run the test to completion. The Core2Duo with a GTX 460 just about managed, but the 2700K with a GTX 280 did not, and neither did a G3258 with a GTX 460. By contrast, the 4870s did ok. Perhaps there's something about AMD's drivers which cope better when the VRAM demands exceed available resources, or something about AMD's designs which simply handles it better.
