GTA V DX11 Benchmark Last Change: 19/Jan/2023, 1336hrs. Whoami: Ian Mapleson http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/sgi.html http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/sgidepot/ Here I present collated results for a range of different systems for the built-in GTA V DX11 benchmark, testing with LOW, HIGH and MAX (where "HIGH" is basically the same settings used by Gamers Nexus for their GPU reviews which they refer to as VH/Ultra), but note I only log data for the final stage of the benchmark run (the plane flight which then transitions to the car chase and exploding tanker); this is because logging the entire run gives useless results due to inter-scene data ruining the averages, etc. See after the tables for details of the tests and other notes. Key (all GPU clocks are given as 'Core/Shader/RAM' or 'Core/Boost/RAM'; a single number refers to just the core clock): RX 580 = PowerColor Red Devil RX 580 8GB, default 1190/2000 core/RAM. GTX 780 Ti = EVGA GTX 780 Ti 3GB (Reference cooler), stock @ 980/1046/1750 core/boost/RAM (stabilises under load at around 1125MHz). GTX 1060 = Gigabyte GTX 1060 6GB Windforce, stock @ 1557/1772/2002 core/boost/RAM (stabilises under load at around 1924MHz). GTX 1080 = PNY GTX 1080 8GB, stock @ 1607/1734/1251 core/boost/RAM (stabilises under load at around 1860MHz). GTX 1080 Ti = Palit GameRock GTX 1080 Ti 11GB, stock @ 1595/1709/1376 core/boost/RAM (stabilises under load at around 1974MHz). NOTE: The GTA V graphics engine has an internal frame rate limit of approx. 188fps. If one is using a CPU/GPU config that can go faster than this then the game will stutter badly, wrecking the 1% and 0.1% Lows. Thus, for systems which could do more than 188fps, I have set a max frame rate limit of 175fps using RivaTuner. One could set it a bit higher I suppose, 185 perhaps, but the closer it is to the engine cap the more likely a stutter will occur if the frame rate tries to go high, so 175 is a decent compromise. The 6850K/1080 Ti combo was constantly hitting 188fps and the stuttering was awful, but the 175 limit fixed the problem; without the 175fps limit the Lows were as bad as just 9fps (it looked terrible). Thus, imposing a frame rate limit for this game can help produce a smoother experience on overly fast systems, though even with a set limit there can still be stutter if using Win10. Really though, for any such fast system, in reality for a game like this one should either just turn on vsync and let it run locked at 60fps (or whatever), or use a 144Hz Freesync/Gsync display if one did want higher frame rates and set the frame rate cap to just above the max monitor refresh, eg. 145. There's a mod can one use to remove the engine cap, but it's a bad idea as it messes up how the physics works. Tables are shown in order of AVG FPS (but do take note of 1% Lows, an indicator of consistency and also of any OS issues, eg. some games run better under Win7 rather than Win10); if there's a tie then the next priority is 1% LOW. 1080p, LOW: Total GPU GPU Cores / Clock VRAM Core RAM CF/ AVG MIN 1% .1% GPU CPU Threads Speed HT GPU(s) MB MHz MHz SLI FPS FPS LOW LOW Manufac. This is also why only the final scene is tested; between each scene the fps is always 270 which ruins the averages aswell. To demonstrate this, here is the data for a Q9550 with an RX 580 at 1440p/MAX for just the last test scene, compared to the same config but for the entire benchmark run with all scenes (notice the radically higher avg for the latter, even though I could see the real fps for each scene was more like the former, and notice how the max for the former still spiked to 115 because I didn't stop the logging quite soon enough): Last Scene All Scenes ----------------------------------- Average: 21.0 66.7 Minimum: 14.1 14.1 Maximum: 115.8 267.7 1% Low: 13.5 14.1 0.1% Low: 11.9 12.9 Further proof is the fact that minimums and lows are very similar. Thus, I only test the final scene of the benchmark run, which is a bit of a pain because it means sitting through the earlier scenes to get there. :} CPU usage was about 60% for a 4GHz 2700K with all threads active at 1080p/HIGH. Interesting that on the 2420 v2 only 8 threads were active, so the game isn't trying to make use of the 4 extra threads available (CPU usage was typically 35% at 1080p/LOW, peaking to 45% during the car chase; usage at 1080p/HIGH was just a little higher). With the Q9950 though, CPU usage was typically maxed out, with GPU usage often dropping off. The 2700K tests with SMT off suggest GTA V really needs more than 4 proper threads, whether that's at least a proper 6-vore with no SMT or a 4-core with SMT (with only 4 threads the Lows really suffer). Interesting that the dual-XEON gets better 0.1% Lows at 1080p/LOW than a 2700K. Note that the ingame settings may be misleading about VRAM usage. When defining the settings for "LOW" mode, the settings panels suggested VRAM usage at 1080p would be 1086MB, but during the benchmark run Afterburner showed it was more like 2300MB, but maybe with GPUs that have only 1GB or 1.5GB RAM the game would be more strict in its usage. It could be that VRAM gets used up simply because existing data isn't being discarded (lazy coding). With the 3GB 780 Ti, Max mode at 1440p tanked to 3 or 4fps with the 2700K sometimes (normal play outside the benchmark was the same), so although it finished the scene 5 benchmark run, it was very choppy at times, ditto the other four scenes not logged. By contrast, the game ran ok at 1080p/MAX. Perhaps with a 4GB card like the GTX 980 performance at 1440p/MAX would be akin to the 780 Ti at 1080p/Max, or it could be that the 2420 v2 was able to get away with the excessive VRAM usage at 1440p/MAX due to using PCIe 3.0 (no idea, more tests needed, eg. crosscheck with a 3930K, 4820K and 4930K). Testing the dual XEON 2640 system with Win10 generally hurt performance and it made the 1440p/MAX test much worse, though the VRAM usage is so high that's not really surprising, it just means that somehow Win7 was able to cope with it more gracefully. For the best avg fps, use Win7 for GTA V. Turning NUMA off usually didn't make much difference, though I did notice the load on the CPU was more evenly loaded. Although it looks like the 1440p/MAX test ran a tad better, it's such a stuttery mess anyway it's not relevant. I won't be able to know for sure what the 780 Ti could actually do in terms of raw performance until I can get a Titan Black, though even then it's not likely to be above avg 25fps at 1040p/MAX which most gamers these days would regard as unplayable. Re the test details below, note that Texture Quality has the largest impact on VRAM usage. Extra Notes ^^^^^^^^^^^ With settings at 1080p/HIGH but with all Advanced settings off (normally 2538MB RAM used), changing various settings alters the VRAM usage as follows: Normal High V-High --------------------- Texture Quality: 1648 2444 2538 Shader Quality: 2361 2442 2538 Normal High V-High Ultra ---------------------------- Post FX: 2487 2495 2538 2538 Reflection Quality: 2435 2441 2460 2538 Population Variety (VRAM variance from 1080p/HIGH): Level VRAM ^^^^^^^^^^^ 0 2219 1 2250 2 2282 3 2314 4 2346 5 2378 6 2410 7 2441 8 2474 9 2505 10 2538 MSAA: Level VRAM ^^^^^^^^^^^ 0x 2538 2x 2671 4x 2853 8x 3217 (for reference, at 1440p this becomes 4GB) With respect to legacy GPUs with approx. 1.5GB VRAM: Starting from HIGH settings but with Texture Quality = Normal, using Shadow Quality = High and Reflection Quality = Very High gives a predicted VRAM usage of 1473MB @ 1080p, rising to 1648MB at 1440p. It'll be interesting to see how a 1.5GB GTX 580 handles GTA V, likewise the 3GB GTX 580 and 7970. Note that although the RX 580 tested with the dual-S2011 Kllisre board tends to give lower avg fps than the 780 Ti, as the resolution and detail increase the RX 580 retains better Lows whereas the Lows for the 780 Ti collapse and the game becomes a stuttery mess (at 1440p/MAX the 780 Ti could drop to 1 or 2fps). It's likely though that given the nature of the GTA V engine, an RX 580 with a much stronger CPU should give much better results in general (sometimes one can see a single thread which is peaking very high). I expect to see this effect when testing with an oc'd 4930K and 2700X. Unsurprisingly, the 1080 Ti does not suffer the stuttering problems that occur with the 780 Ti at 1440p/MAX, it has plenty of VRAM to hold all the data. ============================================================================================================================================================================================================ CPU-Zs: i7 2700K @ 5.0: http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=2334534 XEON E5 2420 v2: http://valid.x86.fr/wd97e9 Q9550 @ 2.83 stock: http://valid.x86.fr/yma3su 2x XEON E5 2640: http://valid.x86.fr/4wp69g i7 870 @ 4308MHz: http://valid.x86.fr/n40mdc Ryzen5 3600 @ 4GHz: http://valid.x86.fr/n9t6wt Ryzen5 5600X @ 4650MHz (PBO 75W): http://valid.x86.fr/wftacb
