What the average frame rate can't convey is just how choppy the motion is, it was really bad. It'll be interesting to see how an 8800GT 512MB behaves for this test. Noteworthy that the 4870/A with a fast CPU doesn't gain at all over just using a basic Athlon, infact the Athlon wins out for some reason. ******************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************** **************************************** MAX RES RESULTS *********************************************************************************************************************************************** Far Cry 2, Ranch Long (2560x1440, D3D-10, 8x AA, 16x AF, NCP/CCC: Max Quality, Overall: Ultra High, Fire/Physics/Real-Trees: Very High, Bloom/HDR ON, 3-Run Avg, uses 1249MB VRAM): Total GPU GPU Cores / Clock VRAM Core RAM CF/ Min Avg Max CPU Threads Speed HT GPU(s) MB MHz MHz SLI FPS FPS FPS Manufac. At high res/detail, the results are more GPU-bound but there's less of a spread between slowest and fastest, though now the order looks more sensible with 5850 CF low-clock CPU being faster than one 5850 with high-clock CPU. However, there's very little scaling at all between single and dual 5850s, so perhaps the CPU is having a different kind of effect, limiting all the configurations. I expect that Athlon II X4 and Phenom II X4 results will make things clearer, eg. perhaps Far Cry 2 would benefit from a CPU that has some L3 as the 250 doesn't have any. Or it could be these effects are specific to the 5850. The 7970 results are interesting; resolution has a major effect on how one or two 7970s compare to one or more 580s, though clearly the scaling is better at higher resolutions. The 2700K/GTX 280 results again show how older cards can perform quite well at lower resolutions under DX9 and lesser detail settings, as long as they're supported by a good CPU, but performance collapses once one moves to a higher resolution/detail mode and DX10. Also note that the GTX 280 results don't convey the surprising amount of visual stuttering I observed when running the tests, something that did not occur with the 5850s. Older cards with 1GB RAM can handle the game at 2560x1440 (ie. they don't run out of VRAM), but the raw performance isn't sufficient to make it playable. At this resolution and detail, a newer GPU matters more than large VRAM. However, such cards would probably be ok at this high res if the AA was reduced to 4X; it's just that people who have 2560-wide displays tend to want to run at max detail if they can, so 8X/16X AA/AF is a more realistic mode to use, though one could argue that at such a high res, lots of AA shouldn't be needed as long as the monitor size is not excessive (even more the case at 4K). The 580 results show that SLI scaling works rather well at high detail, assuming the presence of a good CPU. FC2 is obviously a more mixed test, rather like Stalker; however, it isn't particularly demanding, given how well even an old 1GB 4870 behaves at HD res (the minimum fps rates are too low to be playable, but turn down the AA to 4X and it would likely be ok). NB: The P55 i5-760/7970 results prove that the older P55 platform still has plenty of potential for handling newer GPUs very well; at max detail, it's only 5% slower than using the same two 7970s in CF on a P67 with a 5GHz 2700K, and this is with an i5 CPU that lacks HT and has much slower RAM. However, for an older game like FC2, anything more than a single GTX 980 is overkill. ******************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************** CPU-Zs: i7 2700K: http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=2334534 My new 6000+: http://valid.canardpc.com/2774696 Athlon II X2 250: http://valid.canardpc.com/2798885 P4/3.4/HT: http://valid.canardpc.com/z2hxcp i3 550: http://valid.canardpc.com/kzfsht John's i7 930: http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1319930 John's i7 860: http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1517889 My new i7 870: http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1507189 i3 550: http://valid.canardpc.com/kzfsht i7 4820K: http://valid.canardpc.com/903y8q (NB: CPU-Z's RAM timings are wrong, should be 11/11/11/28/1T) My old i7 860: http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1295195 i5 760 @ 2.8: http://valid.x86.fr/ly1ewa i5 760 @ 4.2: http://valid.x86.fr/pfy34a i7 870 @ 4.3: http://valid.x86.fr/n40mdc Pentium G3258 @ 3.2: http://valid.x86.fr/y0epbm i5 2500K @ 4.7 http://valid.x86.fr/bqas6m (not sure why this is showing as 4.77) Q6600 @ 2.4 stock http://valid.x86.fr/e9ivqg XEON E5 2420 v2: http://valid.x86.fr/wd97e9 Q9550 @ 2.83 stock: http://valid.x86.fr/yma3su i7 870 @ 4308MHz: http://valid.x86.fr/n40mdc Ryzen5 5600X @ 4.3GHz: http://valid.x86.fr/3npls9 Phenom II 1090T @ 3.2: http://valid.x86.fr/45hrud Ryzen5 5600X @ 4.675: http://valid.x86.fr/wftacb -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Other Benchmark Info: http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/tests-jj.txt http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/acodyssey.txt http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/acorigins.txt http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/bioshockinfinite.txt http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/dirtrally.txt http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/f1_2018.txt http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/farcry5.txt http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/farcrynewdawn.txt http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/gtav.txt http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/hitman2.txt http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/metroLLredux.txt http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/residentevil6.txt http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/rottr.txt http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/sottr.txt http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/thedivision.txt http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/witcher3wh.txt http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/pctests.html http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/x3tcbench.txt http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/stalkercopbench.txt http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/uniginebench.txt http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/uniginebench2.txt http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/uniginebench3.txt http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/uniginebench4.txt http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/viewperf.txt http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/ptboats.txt http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/callofjuarez.txt
