DIRT RALLY DX11 Benchmark Last Change: 18/Jan/2023, 2114hrs. Whoami: Ian Mapleson http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/sgi.html http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/sgidepot/ Here I present collated results for a range of different systems for the built-in Dirt Rally DX11 benchmark, testing with MEDIUM and ULTRA presets. See after the tables for various observations. Key (all GPU clocks are given as 'Core/Shader/RAM' or 'Core/Boost/RAM'; a single number refers to just the core clock): RX 580 = PowerColor Red Devil RX 580 8GB, default 1190/2000 core/RAM. GTX 780 Ti = EVGA GTX 780 Ti 3GB (Reference cooler), stock @ 980/1046/1750 core/boost/RAM (stabilises under load at around 1125MHz). GTX 1060 = Gigabyte GTX 1060 6GB Windforce, stock @ 1557/1772/2002 core/boost/RAM (stabilises under load at around 1924MHz). GTX 1080 = PNY GTX 1080 8GB, stock @ 1607/1734/1251 core/boost/RAM (stabilises under load at around 1860MHz). Watching the CPU usage did show typically 6 or more threads active, so it's not surprising that at some point the 2420 v2 being able to place those threads on fully separate cores would show an advantage, even with the much lower clocks. This is not the case with every game though, it varies greatly. Some games much prefer IPC and high clocks, but others are well written to exploit lots of cores and Dirt Rally seems to be one of them. Possibly the dual XEON 2640 config slid down the rankings due to lower IPC offsetting the higher clocks, with perhaps some thread scheduling issue aswell (hard to say). Not much variance between min and max in this game, but a much larger disparity when varying the resolution. Note that after doing the 5GHz 2700K tests with a 780 Ti at 1080p, benching SotTR somehow updated the drivers to 411.70, hence the driver change for the 5GHz results. Clearly though. Dirt Rally does not impose much of a CPU load. Stil, over time I'll update the results with the newer driver so they're cleanly matched. With Win7, CPU usage was only about 30 to 35% with a 4GHz 2700K, with 6 threads active; looks like this game is optimised for quad-core CPUs (and the 2700K tests suggest not having SMT doesn't matter, so a 2500K should be fine). The lesser IPC/clock of the 2420 v2 is holding things back a bit at 1080p, but the absolute performance is still nicely above 60fps even with Ultra settings, while at 1440p the CPU effect disappears. Also, the spreading out of the six threads among more cores (ie. real cores rather than HT threads) means the overall CPU usage was only about 28% max, though I did notice that Windows' core parking was not always optimal, eg. one core with neither thread active while another core had both threads active (changing video modes corrects this, grud knows why). Under Win10 with NUMA on, the dual-XEON 2640 system only uses one CPU, but it does give better performance than with NUMA off even though the latter does allow both CPUs to be used; I expect this is because, given this games IPC sensitivity, using both CPUs adds latency and thus hurts performance (I expect on a single CPU with 12 cores this wouldn't happen). However, since Win10 does produce better 0.1% Lows on dual-CPU systems, and the difference between Win7 and Win10 at higher res/detail is quite small, all future dual-CPU system testing for this game will be done with Win10 and with NUMA turned on. This is the only game though where this makes sense; all other games I'm benchmarking run better on dual-CPU systems with NUMA off. It's interesting though that a game being able to make use of both CPUs isn't necessarily a good thing, because doing so adds latency which can hurt game engines which have been written with lower core count, high IPC CPUs in mind. I'll discuss the Q9950 results later, once I have results for the 2420 v2 and 2700K with the RX 580. VRAM usage was as follows (in MB): 1080p 1440p ------------------------ LOW: 1572 1854 MEDIUM: 1634 1910 ULTRA: 2298 2531 Notice how there's not much difference between LOW and MEDIUM at any particular resolution, but quiet a jump for a particular detail level between different resolutions. 08/Aug/2019 update: I originally ran this benchmark at LOW settings aswell, but the test takes so long that I've decided it's not practical to keep doing that in terms of the time involved. Likewise, as of Jan/2023 I'm not going to do any more MEDIUM tests either. Thus, I'm only going to test with ULTRA settings from now on. In general though, at 1080p, using LOW settings is typically about 15% faster than MEDIUM for average fps, with 1% Low about 7% better; at 1440p LOW is 20% faster than MEDIUM, with 1% Low about 9% better. The frame rates are so high though, pretty much any config with enough VRAM should be able to use at least MEDIUM settings anyway, another reason not to bother with LOW anymore. For reference though, here are the results for LOW and MEDIUM as they stood before I ceased testing such configurations: 1080p, LOW: Total GPU GPU Cores / Clock VRAM Core RAM CF/ AVG MIN MAX 1% .1% GPU CPU Threads Speed HT GPU(s) MB MHz MHz SLI FPS FPS FPS LOW LOW Manufac.
