See after the tables for extended system details. Key (all GPU clocks are given as 'Core/Shader/RAM'; a single number refers to just the core clock): Qu/FX = Quadro FX card 8800GT/G = Gigbyte 8800GT 512MB Zalman (Turboforce Edition), stock @ 700/1700/1900. oc'd to 775/1850/1900 on my i7 860. 8800GT/A = ASUS 8800GT 512MB Glaciator, stock @ 602/1512/1800, oc'd to 685/1725/1900 on my i7s, oc'd to 650/1608/1900 on the Athlon64 X2 6000+ 3.225GHz PC (ASUS M2N32 WS Pro, 4GB DDR2/800 RAM). 5850/S = Sapphire 5850 Xtreme 1GB, default 725/1000 core/RAM, oc'd to between 870 and 900 core, 1200 RAM, using Trixx 4.6.1. 7970/S = Sapphire Vapor-X 7970 3GB, stock @ 1050/1500 RAM (effective RAM = 6GHz) 7970/M = MSI 7970 Lightning 3GB, stock @ 1150/1500 RAM (forced to run at 1050/1500 when in CF to show proper scaling) 4870/A = ASUS 4870 1GB, default 750/900 core/RAM. 4870/P = Powercolor 4870 1GB, default 770/900 core/RAM, but forced to 750 core when running in CF. 4870/S = Sapphire 4870 512MB, default 750/900 core/RAM. 4870/H = HIS 4870 512MB, default 750/900 core/RAM. A system with a fast CPU and lesser GPU will be nowhere near as good for this game as a system with a fast GPU and lesser CPU. This is the kind of game for which the Unigine benchmarks are a good metric, ie. if GPU X is 2X faster than GPU Y for Unigine Heaven @ high res, then it's very likely the same difference will apply for CoJ @ high res. Other games are much more affected by CPU power, especially Stalker and X3TC, though newer cards are so quick that it doesn't tend to matter much at low-res for these older games, or often even at high res. However, the same principlies apply to how newer games may behave with older vs. newer cards from any time period. At low res, CPU performance is relevant to some extent, eg. 5850 CF @ 875MHz core with a 3GHz 2-core AMD is slower than 5850 CF @ 725MHz with the same CPU at 4.1GHz. However, the frame rates are so high for this type of card that one would probably never notice the difference. It might be more relevant for older cards being used in systems with older CPUs, ie. fitting a better CPU can help. This might become clear later when I test X1950Pro, 3870, 8800GT, with CPUs such as the P4, Athlon64, etc. Also at low-res, scaling from 2x to 3x GPUs is not so much, though the frame rates are so high it really doesn't matter.
