ALL OF THIS WAS FOR ORIGINS, REDO ONCE 2700K + 780 Ti NUMBERS ARE DONE! Increasing resolution reduces avg fps a lot more with higher detail settings. The game also appears to have some kind of VRAM management which means that, even when the settings control panel predicts a certain configuration will need more VRAM than in theory avasilable, in reality the game engine does a decent job of trying to keep VRAM usage under control. What happens is that, unlike some games which barf entirely when too much VRAM is needed (eg. GTA V) - this game maintains a lower avg fps but the 1% and 0.1% Lows get really bad. If you have limited VRAM, it's likely that just one or two key settings can make a big difference to VRAM usage, typically texture quality and AA settings. When it comes to performance though it's perhaps more complicated as ACO does seem to need a deceent CPU aswell. I'll explore this more in the future as more test data is accumulated, but until then you can find a lot of discussion about this within Gamers Nexus reviews which employ the ACO benchmark. In terms of the performance variance based on the available presets, testing the dual XEON 2640 system (NUMA on) with a 780 Ti using Win10 gave the following avg fps results for each preset at 1080p and 1440p (I did not bother testing with LOW as it was basically the same as V.LOW): AvgFPS: V.LOW MED HIGH V.HIGH ULTRA ------------------------------------------------ 1080p: 57.7 51.8 49.0 41.5 37.8 1440p: 51.2 42.3 33.4 27.9 26.3 ie. the spread from V.LOW to ULTRA is more severe at a higher resolution, but the absolute change isn't as bad as one observes in many other games. However, what happens to the 1% and 0.1% Lows is more revealing: 1% LOW: V.LOW MED HIGH V.HIGH ULTRA ------------------------------------------------ 1080p: 39.7 35.7 32.8 11.9 11.2 1440p: 36.5 31.5 27.0 18.7 17.7 .1% LOW V.LOW MED HIGH V.HIGH ULTRA ------------------------------------------------ 1080p: 34.5 31.5 28.4 2.5 3.6 1440p: 30.8 27.3 23.6 11.7 7.0 ie. at higher resolutions and details where the 780 Ti's 3GB VRAM isn't really enough, the avg fps doesn't look too bad but the Lows suffer horribly, ie. the game will stutter much more, though note that using Win7 produces enormous stutter even at 1080p (this game definitely benefits from being run with Win10 even though it's DX1, at least on a dual-CPU system anyway). Testing the dual XEON 2640 system stock under Win10 showed only one CPU being used, but turning NUMA off allowed both CPUs to be used, giving a 6% speedup and much better Lows. I'll talk about general CPU usage later after more results are added, but for the moment it's clear this game is best run under Win10 with NUMA mode off since it's 10% faster than using Win7. The 6850K/1080 Ti results are fascinating. They are basically identical, but I noticed that one thread on a particular more was pegged out at 100% for the entire duration of the test, suggesting that whatever that thread was doing it was preventing the game from being any quicker. The really bizarre thing though is that the thread in question, whatever it is, was pegged at 100% even during the menu screens! The dual-XEON system didn't do this. ******************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************* CPU-Zs: i7 2700K @ 5.0: http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=2334534 XEON E5 2420 v2: http://valid.x86.fr/wd97e9 Q9550 @ 2.83 stock: http://valid.x86.fr/yma3su 2x XEON E5 2640: http://valid.x86.fr/4wp69g i7 870 @ 4308MHz: http://valid.x86.fr/n40mdc Ryzen5 3600 @ 4GHz: http://valid.x86.fr/n9t6wt Ryzen5 5600X @ 4650MHz (PBO 75W): http://valid.x86.fr/wftacb
