Older HDTach tests were done using an LSI 22320-R PCIX U320 SCSI card in a proper PCIX/133 slot (ASUS M2N32 WS Professional board), or an LSI SAS3442X-R PCIX card, or LSI SAS3082E-R PCIe card, or an HP P410 PCIe card (the latter for testing 6Gbit SAS devices). When I test FC drives (not done any yet), I'll use a QLA2342 card.
Whenever possible, 6Gbit-capable SATA devices are tested via a proper 6Gbit SATA3 port (Intel port on a P67-based ASUS Maximus IV Extreme, i7 2700K). Write performance is not included much yet, though I'll add misc results I obtain at the bottom of this page. Note that HDTach uses 1MB = 1000000 bytes. Results are ordered by max read speed; if two devices give the same result, then the ordering is via: average speed, minimum speed, burst rate, access time.
My real-world access time test consists of searching a large number of small files, in this case four copies of,usr/share from a full 6.5.30 OS installation, approx. 4GB of data and more than 200000 files, copied onto each disk in one subdirectory. I use the find command with a file name that doesn't exist, thus forcing the search to scan the whole directory. Testing is done with a Fuel 600MHz/V12, connected via a QLOGIC QLA12160/66 PCI64 U160 SCSI card (results with an LSI 21320-IS were slower), LSI SAS3442X-R or QLA2342 (note that in many cases, a faster CPU can boost performance by up to 10%, eg. using a Fuel/900 instead).
